REDUCE - REUSE - REPAIR - RECYCLE
One person's waste is another's resource

 DID YOU KNOW?

Waste

Recycling

Overall the UK recycles only 18% of its waste, third from bottom in Europe

Up to 80 % of household waste can be recycled or composted

The Netherlands and Germany recycle over 50%.

In the UK Liverpool has the worst recycling rate at 4%, Nottingham City is marginally better at nearly 9%

Litchfield has the highest recycling rate at 47%

The Government wants the UK to recycle over 30% within the next 5 years, although they admit at least 60% is achievable

Recycling 1 aluminium drink can save enough energy to run a TV for three hours

If the UK recycled all aluminium cans, 14m fewer dustbins would be filled every year

The average British family throws away six trees' worth of paper every year

Manufacturing paper from recycled material not only save forests, but uses a third of the energy requirements than manufacturing it from wood pulp

For every tonne of paper recycled saves 17 trees and 7000 gallons of water

Nottingham

The majority of Nottingham City’s waste is incinerated (60%), the rested is land filled with a small amount (8.8%) not recycled

The proposed expansion of Nottingham’s incinerator will lead to industrial waste being imported from the surrounding areas, as far as Staffordshire and Yorkshire.

The City Council is losing £1 million per year of OUR money as a result of its heating contract with the incinerator

Although landfill is far less polluting than incineration, it can be can be harmful to our health and the environment as the waste decomposes, polluting water courses and atmospheric pollution.  Landfill is also becoming scares and it a waste of a useful product.

EcoTeams

Making Small Changes, Making Big Savings

Would you like to save money? Do you know how your everyday actions have an effect on your household bills as well as the environment?

Day to day habits such as not leaving the television on standby or not leaving lights on in a room you are not using, cuts the amount of electricity you use, which in turn cuts your household bills and also helps reduce the threat of global warming. It is really as simple as remembering to make some small but invaluable changes to the way we live. To help people make changes such as these, the charity Global Action Plan have created a programme called EcoTeams.

An EcoTeam is a group of between 6-8 households who meet once a month for four months.  Together the team discusses ways to reduce electricity, gas and water consumption as well decrease the amount of rubbish that they throw away.

The initiative only takes a couple of hours each month and it’s a great way to meet and get together with like-minded people. It includes a monthly meeting, looking at different topics, and time for measuring (for example, how much electricity is used each month). Anyone can form an EcoTeam: friends, neighbours, colleagues, acquaintances, or through a local interest or Church group.

It works! To date, over 300 households have taken part in Nottinghamshire. Households participating in the EcoTeams programme have on average reduced their Gas by 15%, Electricity by 9%, Water by 21% and Rubbish 28%. This means lower bills!

There has already been an EcoTeam in Sneinton and we are looking for more people to take part in this area as well as other parts of the city. It is free and support is on hand throughout the programme. We are also looking for people living in the city, and the borough’s of Rushcliffe and Broxtowe to join an EcoTeam.

Join today and start saving. Contact Julie or Cindi on 0115 917 8080 or 07905 534580 or email:

The EcoTeams Project is funded by and works in partnership with the Big Lottery Fund's Community Recycling and Economic Development (CRED) Programme, Broxtowe Borough Council, Rushcliffe Borough Council, Nottinghamshire County Council, Nottingham Green Partnership and the Broxtowe Partnership Trust.
