“I repeat, the emissions from
incinerator processes are extremely toxic.. Some of the emission are
carcinogenic… We must use every reasonable instrument to eliminate them
altogether”.

Waste Incineration
It is generally accepted that emissions standards are based on what can be measured and what is technically achievable, rather than what is safe…. This point was accepted by the Environment Agency.

There are… some truths which can
be drawn from the debate over the health impacts of incineration. Firstly, that
the health effects which result from an incinerator’s emissions are not yet
fully know. Secondly, that the regulation of incineration to date has been
rather poor and has resulted in poor practices developing in some incinerators.

(Mr. Blunt) The reason you were not able to answerer Mr
Benn’s question directly….is that incineration is not safe, is it? If you were
asked “is incineration safe?” you cannot say yes. (Dr Whitworth) I cannot give
you categoric answer that any waste management option is safe.

Are we really talking about the same incinerator? The one that regularly breaches its authorised emission levels set by the Environment Agency? The incinerator which burns materials which could otherwise be recycled, releases global-warming and acid rain gases, toxic heavy metals, toxic chemicals and poisons including PCB's and dioxins which are amongst the most cancerous known to man? Or is he just on another planet, obviously not a green one!
