27/04/06 Nottingham Evening Post 'Isn't it time to phase out Eastcroft'
I write regarding the article 'Incinerator bosses face legal action following
shutdown' (Post, April 30).
The article says the city council is preparing to sue the owners of Nottingham's
Eastcroft Incinerator Waste Recycling Group for the lack of availability to burn
the city's waste due to incinerator breakdowns. It says the council has incurred
additional landfill costs as a result.
So why doesn't the city recycle the waste? Why does it only achieve the
statutory minimum? If the city improved its appalling recycling record there
would be no need for litigation.
If next-door neighbours Rushcliffe can achieve 52%, Nottingham - at 14% - has a
long way to go. And surely after 34 years it is time to phase out this highly
unnecessary incinerator.
