WASTE FIGHT PLEDGE |

Campaigners have vowed to continue their fight to
block proposed expansion to Nottingham's incinerator. The Waste Recycling Group (WRG) today announced it would appeal against the city council's decision to reject its plans to expand the Eastcroft site it owns off London Road. The company wanted to increase the amount of rubbish burned there by 100,000 tonnes to 250,000 tonnes by 2010. This was rejected last month on the grounds that it would hamper future business, recreation and accommodation plans for land on Nottingham's east side. But the firm believes this is not justified and says it would increase the supply of energy to the city. Protest group Nottingham Against Incineration and Landfill believes WRG is using its power to force an expensive legal challenge. Spokesman Jon Beresford said: "It is clear that our supporters want us to fight on and we intend to step up the campaign." If the firm wins, waste could be brought in from up to 35 miles away. |
