BURNING QUESTIONS AS RECYCLING INCREASES

07 July 2006
Since reading in the Evening Post about the fact that WRG (Waste Recycling Group) had offered tours of the incinerator to members of Nottingham City Council's planning committee, I thought it appropriate to ask for a tour myself.

I, like many other members of the public, surely feel that thanks to Nail (Nottingham Against Incineration and Landfill) there are many more questions that need to be raised with WRG before any expansion goes ahead, particularly the question of where on earth the extra waste will be coming from if the city increases its recycling targets to 13% (the statutory minimum set by government, I hasten to add) and other areas and borough councils increase their recycling targets.

Will we have the scenario that happened in Hampshire whereby there simply wasn't enough waste for the hungry incinerator and recycling bins were emptied into it and burnt to provide it with the necessary fuel?

I have a real concern that with any expansion of Eastcroft recycling will simply be crowded out by WRG's desire to keep the incinerator burning.

Since the initial exhibition at the Notts County football ground a long time ago, we have failed to see any representation or open dialogue from WRG and as yet I have not been set a date for my own personal tour of the incinerator.

WRG also failed to show at the public meeting set for April by the BBC which simply begs the question: What are they ashamed of/hiding from members of the concerned public?

The proposals to expand the incinerator will undoubtedly affect a very large community but it appears time and time again that WRG have failed in their duty to liaise with the local people who hold concern.

As I read on the Nail website, if the incinerator is as safe as WRG make out then why has it got such a tall chimney? If what comes out of an incinerator stack is safe then how many of the WRG board of directors live down-wind of one - not many I shouldn't wonder.
