"Incinerator's Make me sick"

The Group

NAIL (Nottingham Against Incineration and Landfill) was originally set up in 2002 by a group of local environmental campaigners. We decided to form a pressure group, when a woman who developed breast cancer approached members of Nottingham Greenpeace. She claimed that there was two other ladies, who shared her office for many years overlooking the incinerator plant, had also developed cancer, one of whom had died. They were believed that their condition was caused by their prolonged exposure to pollution from Eastcroft incinerator.

The group developed and was joined by local residents of the Eastcroft Incinerator. We have since gained growing support, since the expansion announcement.

The group has members from Greenpeace, Nottingham Friends of the Earth, Nottingham Green Party and CABS (Clean Air for Bakersfield and Sneinton).

The Campaign

 At NAIL we believe that we all have the right to breath unpolluted air, air free of toxins, heavy metals and substances such as PCB’s and dioxins which are highly poisonous and cause cancer. We believe that we should be tackling the problem of waste head on.

Before we even consider incineration, we have to refer to The Waste Management Hierarchy;

REDUCE           Reduce waste, minimise the need for packaging and the disposable throw away society. We need to use materials that can be more readily recycled or compostable.

REUSE             If we can reuse it do so or give it to someone who can, why not give it to a charity shop where it can be reused and raise money for a good cause.

RECYCLE          Maximise Recycling. Up to 80 percent of household waste is recyclable or compostable. Even Nottingham City Councils website states that 60 % of household waste can be recycled. They should practice what they preach, currently they achieve only 9%, one of the lowest in the country!
