27/8/05 – Environment Agency Fail to ACT (AGAIN!)
We have received a response to our letter requesting that the EA use their powers to force Eastcroft incinerator to comply with its licence of issue a prohibition notice to shut down until they can demonstrate that they can comply.
Unfortunately although the EA seemed concerned at Eastcrofts recent dioxin breach, they suggest that the release of the most cancerous substance known to science (9 times the authorised limit for possibly up to six months!) would have a negligible effect on human health!
We foolishly believed that the EA's remit was to protect the public and the environment from those who's remit is to make loads of money and pay shareholders.
So why does Eastcroft continue to breach its operating licence and avoid prosecution? See our letter and the EA's response below.

20/3/03 – We write to the Environment Agency
NAIL wrote to the EA regarding the continual emission breaches by Eastcroft incinerator. We reported that, in a Greenpeace report in 2001 ‘Criminal Damage: A review of the performance of municipal waste incinerators’, Eastcroft was listed as the fifth worst Incinerator, in terms of the number of self-reported breaches, between 1999-2000 it reported 53 breaches.
We requested that the EA take action against the incinerator and force it to comply with its licence or use their powers to close it down.
