07-03-06 NAIL Supporters Banner Drop in Sneinton

Local residents supporting the NAIL (Nottingham Against Incineration and Landfill) campaign raised their profile to prevent the expansion of Eastcroft incinerator by creating colourful banners and displaying them across streets in the community of Sneinton.

When a previous banner was displayed over Sneinton Boulevard in November last year, the City Council sent out workmen to remove it claiming that the protestors required planning permission. Within minutes of this peaceful protest, the Police were on the scene trying to prevent the protestors.

A local resident said "What I find unbelievable is that the authorities seemed to be more concerned with removing our banners than the forcing Eastcroft incinerator, our dirty neighbour, to comply with their pollution licence. Eastcroft has had 32 known pollution breaches in the last four years, yet they don’t get threatening visits from the authorities!"
