28-10-06 National Anti-Incinerator Alliance Meeting - London
Three Nottinghamshire anti-incinerator pressure groups joined a national alliance to fight government plans to build waste incinerators across the country. Nottingham Against Incineration and Landfill (NAIL) Mansfield Against Incineration (MAIN) and Rainworth Action Group (RAG) met with other community groups fighting plans for incinerators within their communities.
The alliances met for the first time in London on united in their cause, calling on the Government to end its support for waste incineration.
In a joint letter to David Milliband, Environmental Secretary the 29 Community groups said that the Governments financial and political support for incineration is undermining the wishes of the people of Nottinghamshire and elsewhere across the UK, who want to see a more efficient and effective approach to waste management.
The coalition of community groups are hoping the Government will take their views into account as it completes the England waste strategy, due to be completed by the end of the year. Currently 23 incinerators are proposed across the county including the expansion of Nottingham’s Eastcroft incinerator and one in Rainworth are being considered
